Pigmentation

Pigmentation

Pigmentation is a common skin concern that appears as darker spots on areas of the skin that are noticeable to the eye.

Pigmentation & Hyper pigmentation

Pigmentation is a common skin concern that appears as darker areas on the skin noticeable to the eye. Hyper pigmentation occurs when the skin produces increased amounts of melanin, often in response to trauma, sun exposure, or hormonal changes.

Common types of hyper pigmentation:

  • Sun Damage: Darkening of the skin caused by sun exposure and UV damage. Sun-damaged areas may include the face, shoulders, and arms. Sun damage can sometimes appear as freckles, sunspots, or other irregularities in skin tone.

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyper pigmentation (PIH): Dark spots that develop after a skin injury, breakout, or wound. The body may produce more melanin in response to trauma, which can result in visible dark areas. PIH can be worsened by picking at skin or delaying healing.

  • Melasma: Pigmentation influenced by hormonal changes, often seen in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause. Typically, melasma appears symmetrically on the face and may be affected by sun exposure and heat.

Assessment & Treatment Options:

At Luminosity Skin and skinMD, hyper pigmentation is assessed through a review of your medical history, medications, and a thorough examination of the skin.

Following assessment, our on-site GPs may prescribe medications (oral or topical) where clinically appropriate. Our dermal clinicians can provide treatments such as laser therapy, chemical peels, and skin needling, which are used to address pigmentation concerns. Individual responses to these treatments can vary.
