6 Skincare Tips For Men

If you're getting up in the morning, washing your face with bar soap and water and running out the door, then it's time to step up your skincare game. We aren't suggesting that you fill up your bathroom cabinet with hard-to-pronounce cleansers and creams you probably won't use. But we do recommend committing to memory and practicing these six skincare tips that will make others do a double-take. But seriously, don't let these steps intimidate you... they're only fine-tuning what you already do.

1. Wash your face with a good cleanser. Be careful of taking super hot showers and using harsh soaps or face scrubs. This makes your skin dry and when your skin is dry you appear wrinkly and much older.

It is important to have a gentle cleanser that will cleanse the skin from the dirt and oil that can accumulate. Lumi's Gentle Cleanser is recommended

2. Stop buying cheap razors. With some men shaving five times a week investing in a quality razor can be a lifetime item, so choose your weapon wisely. A too-close shave does more than just nick the skin. Continued trauma caused by cutting the skin can cause skin breakage over time. Invest in a quality razor and go with, not against, the grain of hair using gentle strokes. Choose a razor that fits your skin sensitivity and beard coarseness, your face will thank you.

3. Make after-shave your new best friend.  After-shave hydrates and soothes the skin; it also seals in the skin after a nice shave. Your after-shave should be alcohol-free because alcohol dries your skin.

4. Don't skip the facial moisturizer. Facial hair is great, but make sure what skin is exposed doesn't feel like sandpaper. Moisturizing daily with Lumi's Moisture + will give you soft, hydrated skin.

5. Never leave home without applying sunscreen. If you can find a moisturizer that contains SPF of 30 or higher, then you're on the way to stopping those pesky wrinkles. Make sure you have a spare sunscreen in the car or desk drawer as reapplication is necessary.

6. Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow to skin, and causes wrinkles, sagging skin and an unhealthy yellowish hue. The good news? Once you quit, the repairing process begins’ which may help reverse the damage that’s already done, depending on its severity.

I have PIGMENTATION what should I do?

If you are a regular YouTuber you will have no doubt surfed the many different beauty treatments to see what actually happens within the beauty industry.  Medical Grade Skin peels are just one. Photos of people with their skin peeling off then a later photo with a brand new smooth complexion are everywhere, in addition to testimonials of the amazing results. Although not as dramatic or as cataclysmic as Samantha from Sex in the City, this proven treatment has been successful with many people with Hypopigmentation and Melasma as well as sun spots and unwanted freckles.

Medical Grade Skin Peels are a skin-resurfacing treatment: it removes dead skin cells, uncovering a ‘new’ layer of skin that appears smoother and more vibrant. As a result, it softens fine lines, minimizes superficial ‘age’ spots and other skin discolorations, and generally improves the tone and texture of your skin. Medical Grade Skin Peels are also very popular for diminishing the appearance of acne scars.”  This treatment is also good for all skin tones, including darker tones.

The treatment usually takes about fifteen to thirty minutes.  What happens next is where all the shocking “skin-melting” photos are coming from.  A few days after the treatment your skin will tighten, darken and begin to crack and peel for the next four to seven days.  Then a brand new layer of skin emerges.  The new layer of skin will be very vulnerable to sunburn so patients have to diligently protect their skin with good sunscreen . While home peel kits are sold, they are usually lower in strength.  It is still highly recommended to have this procedure performed by a clinician, especially with high strength Medical Grade Skin Peels.

Freckles & Pigmentation

Growing up, I hated my freckles and wanted so badly to mask them. I’d try every foundation and powder in my mother’s vanity until the entire surface of my face was covered and I resembled Casper the Friendly Ghost even more than my naturally pale Irish skin would normally. Then, there were the old wives tales—namely, that rubbing a lemon or buttermilk on your cheeks would get rid of your freckles. Needless to say, 20 years later, I still had a face full of them, but after recent laser therapy these  “angel kisses.” are disappearing, thanks to the expertise of Michelle Doolan our expert in skin and pigmentation!

With time the natural colour of your skin can change in some areas – with freckles and dark patches forming.  Sunlight and genetics are the primary causes for pigmentation and some people (such as fair skinned people) are more susceptible than others.

Treatment

The laser treatments available at Luminosity Skin and Laser Clinic can treat different types of pigmentation including:

  • Freckles/sunspots
  • Some birthmarks
  • Age spots/liver spots
  • Pigmentation caused by pregnancy

For the best results for your individual skin type and pigmentation we use the SP Dynamis laser. This laser enables treatment using varying wavelengths for different depths of treatment depending on the type of pigmentation that you suffer from.

Maintaining your skin after treatment

After treatment it’s important that you avoid strong sunlight and UV lights for at least the following week or for as long as possible. This will minimise irritation and allow the skin to heal. After this period of time it’s important that you apply sunblock whenever you go out into the sun. We also recommend wearing a hat and other coverings if you wish for treatment to last for as long as possible.

It’s extremely important to take care of your skin after you receive a cosmetic laser treatment for pigmentation. Receiving these treatments is an investment in your appearance and in order to make the most out of your refreshed appearance for as long as possible it’s important to take care of your skin.
